Nominated for Small Business of the Year

November 20, 2008 1 comment

Dave with Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce President Tony Osachoff. Each year the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce puts out the nominations for a vairety of Business Excellence Awards including Outstanding Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year, Outstanding Small Business of the Year, Newsmaker, Legacy Leadership and Innovative Spirit.

During the luncheon two weeks ago,  my company – Dave.ca Communications Inc. – was nominated for Outstanding Small Business of the Year.  While it does look like Chamber President Tony Osachoff and I are merely holding a framed piece of white paper, trust me, it is really the nomination certificate.

Dave.ca Communications specializes in political, on-line and non-profit campaigns.  I have non-disclosure agreements with a number of my clients but during the past year I worked on the nominations and campaigns for a number of political candidates; technology training for companies; co-ordinated the Wear Pink Anti-Bullying Day; developed several media campaigns for non-profit organizations; designed website, Facebook presence and print media campaigns; organized fundraising events and donated hundreds of hours of service to various groups.

There are roughly a dozen other companies nominated in the Small Business category which shows the resiliency of local entrepreneurs and the strong economy we help build.

The winners will be announced during the Business Excellence Awards Gala Evening on January 31, 2009.

How I Got Dave.ca

How Did I Get Dave.ca?As I door knock, deliver flyers, attend events and speak with residents in Port Coquitlam I am asked a number of tough questions about policies, issues and my positions on various topics. That said, the number one question I am asked is, “How did you get the domain name Dave.ca?”.

With that in mind, here is the story.

Raise a Reader

Dave with CKNW host Christy Clark at the 2008 Raise a Reader event.I love reading.  I read a couple of books a month, daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, at least two magazines a week plus whatever work related reading I am doing.  My perfect vacation always includes lying on a beach and reading.

Today I joined the fun crew at CKNW (including afternoon host Christy Clark pictured with me at the left) to sell newspapers at the corner of Georgia and Granville for the annual Raise A Reader campaign.  The money raised stays in the community to support local literacy programs.  Since 2002 this program has raised over $10 million.

The two hours on the street were a lot of fun with members of the Vancouver Canucks stopping by – including mascot Finn who, well, attacked me…photos to follow.

We really need to bring this event to Port Coquitlam next year.

Terry Fox Hometown Run a Success

Dave at the 2008 Terry Fox Hometown Run with Rick Hansen.Just got back from the the 28th Annual Terry Fox Hometown Run and it was another success.  Great weather brought out nearly 6,000 people in support of Terry’s Marathon of Hope.

This is my sixth year organizing the event and I just love it.  The participants, over 200 volunteers and the support of many community groups makes the day that much more special.

Not sure how much was raised, but I am guessing in the $100,000 range.

I love this photo at the left with me, the Man in Motion Rick Hansen (who many people do not realize was a personal friend of Terry Fox) and Donna White, Provincial Director for the Terry Fox Foundation.  Having Terry’s image in the background truly makes this photo special.

If you are interested in getting involved with next year’s Terry Fox Hometown Run either as a runner or volunteer please let me know – dave@dave.ca.  See you on Sunday, September 13, 2009!

Wear Pink Anti-Bullying Day

February 28, 2008 1 comment

North Surrey Secondary Wearing Pink and Saying NO to Bullying!Yesterday was Wear Pink Anti-Bullying Day. Many organizations, individual, companies and schools (like North Surrey Secondary picture at the left) got involved by wearing pink and saying NO to bullying.

Over the past month or so, I had the honour of working with Christy Clark and CKNW on making the day a reality. Mostly, I helped with the online presence / strategy / viral marketing / social networking / getting the word out part of the event. By yesterday, over 125,000 people confirmed on Facebook that they would wear pink and say NO to bullying.

Hundreds of emails, Facebook messages, photos and videos have been pouring in and I think it will be a few weeks until we have everything sorted out.

The good news is the event was a success with lots of media and awareness on the issue of bullying. The better news is that a Foundation will soon be set-up so the anti-bullying message continues throughout the year and leading up to the last Wednesday of every February where the Wear Pink event will be held. Stay tuned for more details.

I will be a guest on Christy’s show today on CKNW 980AM starting at 12:35pm to talking about the event and the growth / interest from the online community (click here to listen live via the web).

Thanks to everyone involved in the Wear Pink event and to all of you who got involved.
