Here is my interview with Ryan Price from CFAX Radio about the iPhone 5 launch and some of the other goodies Apple announced:

Should you rush out and buy one? Well…depends. If you really want to save some money, the market will be flooded with a whack of iPhone 4S product soon – so picking up a year old phone at a killer price ($99 from cellular companies with a 3-year contract or from a friend / Craigslist for under $300) can be good.

If you are a Blackberry user, perhaps wait until early 2013 when RIM is suppose to announce the newest Blackberry.

If you are a Samsung Galaxy S3 customer – wait until December when the lawsuit with Apple is (hopefully) finally resolved. This way you ensure your Galaxy is actually going to have support and new versions.

Ok, maybe not…but during the course of five hours over the last two days, the Canadian Senate’s Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee considered Bill S-209, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (prize fights).

This Act will clear up “concerns” that the Criminal Code of Canada under Section 83.2 prohibits MMA. This was never the case, in fact Canadian Heritage Minister, James Moore, appeared before the City of Vancouver in December 2009 to confirm this fact. But still, there were some folks (*cough* unelected political hacks posing as helpful bureaucrats at the City of Vancouver *cough*) who thought it was, so the Federal Government has now decided to make it crystal clear.

Coupled with the news from Monday that in British Columiba, Premier Christy Clark and Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Ida Chong will be forming an Athletic Commission, this has been an eventful week in Canada for combat sports.

My take is this Act will pass through the majority led Conservative Senate and House without any problems.

As was to be expected, media tripped over themselves to speak with me. My advanced insights into election results, Twitter and Facebook coupled with my modesty, were needed to help pundits make sense of this crazy world we live in.

Yes, everyone loved me. Well, almost everyone.

It seems CKNW’s own Legislative Bureau Chief, Sean “What do you mean (hic) it’s last call?!” Leslie was not impressed. In fact he Tweeted the following:

Yes, Mr. Leslie was suggesting that my awesomeness in predicting the recent Alberta, BC byelections and Mayoral races in Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam using social media stats is akin to luck or happenstance. Hence his suggestion that a broken clock is right twice a day.

So let’s look at that and compare the stats.

I have used social media to predict the order – not just who will win, but the ORDER the candidates will finish. I did this in five elections, held on three days involving nineteen Candidates for 100% accuracy.

Mr. Leslie’s “clock is right twice a day” method of success first off counts on the clock NOT being digital (@#$%’n Luddite) and not being a 24 hour type of clock (showing 11pm as opposed to 23:00hrs). Ok fine.

So, assuming Mr. Leslie’s old broken clock displays the time of 10:11:12 (10:11am and 12 seconds) this means that clock is correct twice a day or .0023% of the time (clock correct for 2 of the 86,000 seconds in a day).

I define success as 100% – Sean, as .0023%. I also define success as writing a blog piece while on a long conference call.

Now I ask you, who would you rather have as your latex salesman?

Pretty much all of my bass playing style came directly from The Ramones. Fast 4/4 time rhythms, low tone three to four notes tops. Simplistic, repetitive, strong bass playing at its best. PLUS I could often drink while playing, using the neck of a beer bottle on the frets then open notes to drink.

The album’s lead off song, “Blitzkrieg Bop”, still stands as a classic tune from the band and the opening lyrics serve as the band’s battle cry, “Hey! Ho! Let’s Go!”. I dare you to not rock out too this song.

The songs tell tales of failed relationships, heading out to a punk show, thoughts of revenge, hanging out with friends and other standard adolescent (my definition being ages 13 to 50) themes…but played REALLY fast. Perfect song therapy!

Ramones still stands the test of time but cover versions by Rob Zombie, The Beautiful South, Jason Mraz, Screeching Weasel (my favourite of all the covers), Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, Pennywise, Kiss, U2 and many others offer some interesting takes on these classic tunes.

But first, I have to say how talented folks are in creating these videos and having them shown to the masses! A video to the tune of Bruno Mars’ “Lazy Song” has over 5 million view; another to Rebecca Black’s “Friday” has over half a million views; Canuck Libre, a guy running half naked in a wrestling mask is starting to get noticed and so many more videos are waiting to be discovered.

As I have said before, I love how Youtube and the Internet level the playing field in having your creative product get exposed to the masses. The creativity is amazing and I enjoy finding the next new thing.

James eloquently dissects the funding cuts and explains what did not get cut – contrary to popular belief.

Here’s a great quote from his television appearance:

More than half the jobs that are going to be lost at the CBC over the coming years, over half of them were going to be cut even if we didn’t touch the budget of the CBC. These were plans that were being made internally at the CBC regardless of the federal budget.” The Minister goes on to say that while funding of the arts is crucial, no one should ever feel they are entitled: “cultural organizations also have an obligation to understand that because they’ve received government funding, they shouldn’t always receive government funding.

I have known James for a number of years and he can certainly be a private person. This interview gives more insight into the man than any other interview I have seen with James. He discusses his recent marriage, the passing of his Mom when he was 16-years-old and being elected just eight years later.

Watch the video below for the arts funding info and be amazed that James is not the “arts cutting right wing Conservative” you thought he was.

Many folks were turned onto this song from the closing credits in the movie Fight Club. A perfect piece of accompanying music!

I can listen to this song over and over and over. What is also very cool are folks who create their cover version, their tribute to the song. With Youtube I have been exposed to some pretty amazing and diverse versions of this classic song.

The county version by Trampled by Turtles; looping and beatbox by the creative Petebox; Norwegian industrial with washing machines as performed by Hurra Torpedo; the last two videos below as a piano and vocal duet although the pianist, Viktoriya Yermolyeva has never met vocalist Sercan Salkir - all these versions offer a fresh take on this amazing song.

This to me is the greatest success of social media / web / Internet: breaking down borders.  Again, the power of the Internet allowed the sharing of this content. Without the ‘Net, would I – or you – have been introduced to this music?

On the whole, “communications experts” who create ads for political campaigns are – and this is the technical term – soulless hacks with no humour, less common sense and have a modicum of talent.

Oh! And moronic.

This is why videos like Fight Fight HST were not done by Government / political folks. It is far too clever. In that same vein, the “Mayor Moonbeam” video has that appeal.

“Mayor Moonbeam” refers to Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson who is in the middle of a re-election bid (remember to vote on November 19th).

The video is creative, funny, interesting and enlightening – which is why it went viral. It also apparently used some copyrighted music and was pulled from Youtube.

However, I have a copy, loaded it on my server and have it here for your viewing pleasure.

I have no idea who created and/or commissioned this video but kudos to all involved for upping the creativity in British Columbian political advertising.

For those folks who will say that I created this video…really? You think I have the technical skills, humour and talent to pull off this creative masterpiece? Why, thank-you.

Did I ever mention that I was in a rock video with Joey “Shithead” Keithly from DOA? I was about 100lbs heavier in the summer of 2000 and had a blast doing the video over two days at the ECCW Wrestling School in Langley, BC.

The video for JP5′s “Beer Drinkin’ Maneaters” played a bunch of times on MuchMusic and MTV Canada (when they actually played music) but did not live up to the Juno hype. Granted much of the hyping for a Juno came from me…so, you know.

JP5 were very respectful of the wrestlers and learned their moves quite quickly. Joey was great to work with and so was Director Mike Love who I have recently discovered is the cousin of a friend. Small world.

While certainly I was AWESOME in my acting role, I was very, very fond of “Nurse Ratchet”.

I even made a 20 second video to bring further clarity to my answer on the looming Canada Post strike.

Anything I can do with Canada Post, I do already over the Internet, with Greyhound (for delivering boxes of Christmas gifts to Toronto) or courier (for the occasional package delivery).

There is not a single bill which cannot be paid by credit card over the phone, Internet or at the mall. You have to leave your house anyway to mail the letter so a little bit further to put it in a drop box is not a big deal. Heck, post date a few cheques, visit the mall, grab some NY Fries and make a day of it.

Ad mail – junk mail if you will (not George Lepp style of course) can be delivered via insert in local newspapers. Or via the ‘Net. Or…not at all really.

Other than Christmas cards, I do not use the mail for sending things. In fact, I know people in their late 20′s who have NEVER sent a letter.

Folks with wedding invitations – you do not have to mail…you just WANT to mail. Are you serious that there is someone on your list without Internet access? Save the money and the environment (go green!) and use a Facebook event or Evite.

If you are a business or online retailer who relies on Canada Post exclusively for your shipments then you are foolish. Think of it this way, you as an enterprising business person are giving over to the government the swift and efficient delivery of your goods and services. (wait for the horror to wash over you) Having only one distribution method is shortsighted. While a bit more expensive, there are other courier or delivery options. Possibly better ones too.

This is not a shot at the hard working men and women who deliver mail. This is a wake up call to you though. You are in a dying industry. Looking for wages and benefits which do not fit with the demand or need of your services is ridiculous.

The Internet along with social media has changed how we communicate. The postal union with outrageous demands will drive those not already using the Internet to do just that.

So to the postal union, thank you for moving forward the Internet and social media revolution while at the same time hopefully forcing your industry to become more competitive.

But let me ask you – is there something you do which must ONLY be handled by Canada Post? Or that they do better or cheaper than another service?

UBC economics major and current law student Chris Thompson’s awesome Fight Fight HST video. Grass roots at it’s finest, this one video has almost DOUBLE the views than ALL the BC Government Youtube videos combined and it really annoyed former Premier.

THE BAD

Guy gets on Skytrain with sword, acts weird, people Tweet out this guy’s behaviour, take photos, cops arrive, hilarity ensues and is captured for Youtube glory. Two clips below.

THE UGLY

Ontario politician George Lepp has some interesting reasons how a photo of his genitals ended up being Tweeted out to the world this past weekend. I do not believe him and frankly, he just got caught with his pants down.

Checkout the piece I wrote on this plus my attempt to duplicate this 21st century “junk mail”. (the laughter will be deafening at this point so best end the post)

UK football (soccer to us in North America) star Ryan Giggs cheated on his wife and two kids with reality TV personality Imogen Thomas (pictured at left).

He did what anyone else in this situation would do who wanted to own up to the errors of his ways: he took out a super injunction in a UK court to prevent the media from discussing it, his wife from finding out and then sued Twitter when info did get out.

Simply put – stupid, interesting, salacious actions of individuals will travel faster than ever before thanks to social media in spite of regional laws.

We saw this with political uprisings in Egypt, Twitter battle between the Rwandan President and British Journalist, Canucks girl flashing her boobs and now the extramarital affairs of a footballer in the UK.

Social media is not the first “communications tool” allowing information flow to circumvent court orders.

Here in Canada in the 1990s with the Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka case, details of the proceedings were banned from Canadian publication. Yet near transcripts appeared in UK and US publications.

Fast forward to 2011 and social media amplifies and quickens the broadcast of news – it does not create it. Of course this brings up the question of privacy, reporting election results, etc but that is a piece for another time.

In short Ryan – and to use the British vernacular – your boorish antics were those of a ruddy wanker. Social media did not cause your actions but certainly allowed the world, your family and children know the type of person you truly are.

Here’s my interview with Sabrina from Mountain FM in beautiful Whistler, BC.

So proud of my friend, BC’s Premier Christy Clark, on her victory tonight in winning her Vancouver – Point Grey byelection. For the first time in 30 years, a member of the sitting government in British Columbia won a byelection.

Yes, it was a close one with only 500 votes giving her the victory but no matter, a win is a win.

Now Christy can truly get down to business and build on the great things she has already done in the less than two months as Premier. Things likes raising the minimum wage; creating Canada’s toughest animal anti-cruelty laws; bringing forward the HST referendum date and providing funding for anti-smoking aids are just some of things Christy as already accomplished.

So far…so awesome.

Floored. Absolutely floored.

One of the doctors who are suggesting that three time child killer Allan Schoenborn is ok to re-enter society admitted today on CKNW’s Bill Good Show that he was unaware of the public outcry against Schoenborn’s release; would “prefer not to comment on this specific case” and was “not aware of [Schoenborn's] ex-wife wherebouts”.

Dr. Johann Brink (pictured at left) is the Director, Clinical Services, Forensic Psychiatry Services Commission (FPSC) and Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and really comes off looking foolish and uncaring to the public at large.

Dr. Brink says his goal is to have Schoenborn return to the community. But Dr., the Tri-Cities is NOT his community.

Dr. Brink says Schoenborn is of  “little risk to [the] public”. Ok…so doctor, of all the patients you have ok’d, how many have committed illegal acts after your clean bill of health? I understand it is more than just a few.

The BIG statement which shows just how out of touch Dr. Brink is with his duel role of patient rehabilitation AND public safety / interest is when he said he was “not aware of [Schoenborn's] ex-wife’s whereabouts”. This is important as Schoenborn is bent on killing his ex-wife. Of course Dr. Brink cannot confirm this due to “privacy issues”. Also, the ex-wife moved away from Merritt, BC – where Schoenborn killed their three children – to Coquitlam. Now Dr. Brink wants to release him into HER community.

So, Dr. Brink says he did not know the ex-wife was in Coquitlam. Doctor, let me suggest five ways you could have found out:

1) Google
2) Read the newspaper
3) Watch the evening news
4) Listen to the radio
5) and this one is crazy I know – ASK VICTIM SERVICES!

UPDATE: At 3:15pm today BC Attorney General Barry Penner says there will be new hearing on outings for Allan Schoenborn due to today’s developments in case.

Late last year the City of Surrey website was redesigned and is one of the best municipal websites in BC.

Then in January of this year she signed up for a Twitter account (@MayorWatts) and sent her first of thus far sixteen Tweets on April 5th. She is obviously taking a slow and cautious aproach to Tweeting which is not a bad thing at this stage.

Finally, today, in a move that will shock and stun many other municipalities (note to self – please refrain from obvious cracks at politicians that basic elements such as walking and chewing gum tend to “shock and stun” some of them…there, that was easy) Mayor Watts had her 2011 State of the City Address Livestreamed to the masses.

Yes, the crowd of a few hundred paying about $100 got to see her live and in person, but for the first time in BC History (note, I have not actually fact checked this…that would slow me down) a municipality showed this address over the Internet in real time.

I think that is awesome and hope other municipalities and the Provincial Government will utilizie this much more in the near future.

I met Barb several years ago in the political scene in British Columbia before she moved to Nova Scotia around 2005. She had a fiery spirit and passion which was evident when her first book, “The 7 Virtues of a Philosopher Queen” came out in 2008.

Instead of resting on this success she moved forward – something most people cannot do. She answered the question “what should I do next” by creating an interesting perfume business which not only is profitable, but helps farmers in Afghanistan.

Barb took her pitch to CBC’s Dragon’s Den and successfully secured the finances and wisdom of “dragon” Brett Wilson.

I love the story because of the empowerment focus. The whole “teach a man to fish and he’ll eat forever” philosophy as opposed to just a charitable handout.

Fast forward to today, and Barb and Brett appear appeared on CTV’s Canada AM for a five minute segment.
