Yesterday I was chatting with a client and I reminded her to add new content to her website in order to keep user interest high. I mean, she had not added content in almost a month! She said she would get around to it…and that got me thinking.
Adding content to your website is SO simple. At least it should be.
If you have an easy to use content management system (CMS) like WordPress then you’re golden. Then you have to be passionate about the topic(s) your website covers. Again should be simple otherwise why the Wolfgang Puck do you HAVE a website?
With ease of operation and passion out of the way, why the delay in writing new content; using flow through content (finding an article you like, writing a few lines about why it is relevant / interesting; copying a paragraph or two then link to the main article source); adding video or even audio?
I think I figured it out. YOU HATE PUPPIES!
You see, your website is like a puppy. You have to feed, groom, show discipline and nurture your website by providing content or it will die.
Would you let your puppy die? If you do not put fresh content on your website, then in my opinion yes – yes you would.
Therefore YOU HATE PUPPIES!
I hope this short video will help inspire and/or shame you into not killing your website and instead feed it fresh new content every day.
And if not – why do you not update the content on your website at least two or three times a week? (you puppy murderer you)

As someone who makes websites for a living I totally agree that fresh content is important for your website’s health. However, I would caution that adding new content simply for sake of adding new content is really just clutter, and may actually hurt your website and lose visitors. If you’re going to update your website every day, make sure it’s with something of quality.
Rob – Thanks for your comment!
Absolutely. Content for the sake of content is silly. I was not as articulate in my blog as I was in my surely soon to be Oscar nominated video. Namely – create compelling, vibrant, dynamic content which supports the goals of your organization and is of interest to your users or future clients.
The complaint I hear most from clients or other website owners is “no one is coming to my site”. If the site is a brochure, then yes, read once and toss.
My experience has shown no matter what the industry regular and relevant content updates WILL increase website traffic many fold and that assists in reaching the goals of that organization.
Yes, definitely. I didn’t think you were implying websites should become dumping grounds for any and all “content”. Just wanted to add the point, as I come across so many websites where it’s clear little thought or care has gone into what that content is for.
Two excellent books on the subject that I often recommend to website owners are Content Strategy for the Web by Kristina Halvorson, and Clout: The Art and Science of Influential Web Content by Colleen Jones.
I haven’t watch your video, but if it’s as Oscar-worthy as you say then I will check it out for sure.
Did you send me this link because I like Beethoven (and great job Chemayne)….don’t have a website…or HATE PUPPIES!!! Wahahaha. Truthfully I’m just allergic and Winston smells.
