Transfering Your Domain Names - A Quick How To

I recently needed to provide support for a client transfering domain names from one registrar to another. In a future post I will explain why, the advantages, etc. but this post is meant to merely break down the basic steps to making the transfer.

Here are the simple steps to move .ca, .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and perhaps other  domains.

To be clear, this procedure will work if you do or even do not currently own the domains you want transferred. In this example, I am sharing what I did with my client who did own the domains. If this is not clear, leave me a comment below and I will attempt to explain better.

Let’s assume your domain name registrar is “Crappy Domains” and you want to move to “Awesome Domains” – and let’s assume you already have accounts set up with both “Crappy” and “Awesome”.

1) At “Crappy Domains” make sure the registrar lock – sometimes known as transfer lock – is turned OFF. If not, you will not be able to make the transfer.

2) Using your account at “Awesome Domains” initiate the domain transfer request. Each registrar is a bit different but most ask what domain(s) you want to transfer to you, you type in the domain name(s) and a request is sent to the owner of that domain name.

3) You now need to get the domain auth code sometimes known as Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) – from “Crappy Domains”. The code is like the password to make the transfer happen. This will be emailed to the email address associated with your “Awesome Domains” account.

4) Now that you have the code, enter it in the appropriate place in your “Awesome Domains” account and within 5 days the domains are moved to your account. You now own the domains.

If you have suggestions on how I can make these steps even clearer or better please leave me a comment.
