George Abbott Now in BC Liberal Race

At 11am today George Abbott announced he was resigning as Education Minister to seek out the leadership of the BC Liberal Party.

I had the opportunity to be in meetings with Mr. Abbott when he was Health Minister and I worked for an MLA. George was smart, funny, engaging, caring and a doer. Of all the current Cabinet Minister, George would get my nod to lead the Party.

George’s “catch phrase” of “In the 1990′s” which he uses to point out the troubles the NDP had / created in BC during that time is humourous. He will, however, have to be ready to answer the chide of “In the in new millennium” – where his Government struggled with various issues as well. Glib is amusing but not from our Leader.

George should be complimented for resigning from his Ministerial post. As I wrote on Twitter, remaining as Minister while campaigning for Leader would be “not only incompatible [with Ministry duties] but irresponsible and ethically challenging.” Hopefully other Cabinet based Leadership hopefuls follow his example.

Below is the audio from his announcement this morning (thanks to Sean over at PublicEyeOnline.com and below that are some links to news pieces about Mr. Abbott’s entrance into the race (the links are updated automatically on page reload).
