Yesterday’s Smart Growth meeting – as always – touched on a number of interesting items for the City of Port Coquitlam. Guns and gun ranges were two of those items.
Since the arrest of the owners of Sureshot Tactical and Hunting for having illegal weapons and ammunition, the City of PoCo is now left reviewing their business license. Should guns sales be permitted in PoCo? I mean, we have bylaws regulating pool tables, video game consoles, strip joints and professional wrestling – should we not adopt something for firearms?
What then about the indoor shooting range? DVC Ventures Inc. operates their shooting range on Kingsway (interesting that the words “gun” “shooting” nor “range” are in the name of the company):
DVC Ventures Inc is the first heated indoor shooting range in BC that is open to the public and has rental firearms. Firearms licensing is not required to try shooting for the first time.
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is here to provide you with the necessary supervision to make your experience safe and enjoyable.
As well we have many staff/competitors to answer any questions you may have in taking your shooting to the next level.
We have 13 individual shooting lanes that are 20 yards long. You can shoot any handgun caliber firearm (up to 500 S&W) from our inventory or as a member with a valid firearms license and transport permit you may use your handguns or pistol calibre carbines as well as shotguns.
What concerns me is the possible use and/or transportation of high powered and/or automatic weapons in our City. As such, I would be in favour of regulating gun stores and ranges to prohibit such firearms.
Shooting as a sport or a recreational outlet – while not something I have done – can be conducted safely in controlled environments. The real question is do we want these things taking place in our City?
There have been no complaints from the public about this range – but again, is this the sort of service we want in our City?
What do you think?

If that girl in the top photo is any indication of the typical customer, then I think I want a gun range in MY city too!
I believe, in an alleged free society with a Charter of Rights and Freedoms to protect the people from abusive government, any repressive regulation which serves to only appease the foolish (to buy their votes) should not exist and any/all that do exist be removed!
right on eric! you really hit the nail on the head there, we ALL have rights, not just a few of us.
The author of this article is oblivious to current firearms laws which prohibit sale of automatic firearms (unless you are police/military) as well as the fact that firearms can be already be bought illegally at greater ease then obtaining legal firearms. I wonder if he also fails to realize a gun is just a barrel, with a hammer to initiate the chemical reaction needed to propel bullets. Such can easily be made by anyone with even an inkling of metal work skills.
Bottom line: You can’t get rid of guns (as great as that would be) and putting legal restrictions on firearms will not protect you as criminals are not the ones who care about breaking laws; restrictions only harm lawful citizens rights and freedoms.
