It appears Mayor Scott Young violated the curfew ruling in his one-year conditional sentence he received for assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her friend.
Last evening, Scott chaired the Finance and Intergovernmental Committee meeting which started at 5:30pm and went to roughly 9pm. Â This means he may have been in violation of his curfew which states he must be at home between 8pm and 6am except to attend City Council meetings on the second and fourth Monday of the month (at which time the curfew is 10pm).
Scott’s car was spotted in the City Hall parking lot just after 8pm last evening. An email to City Hall confirms “Mayor Young remained the Chair until the end of the meeting” which “adjourned last night at 9pm”. City Hall staff could not state whether or not Scott had special permission to be out beyond his curfew.
My question would be if the curfew is being broken – how often has this occurred? As well, if special permission is being given for curfew modifications, how often has this happened and for what reasons? The sentence is supposed to be punitive and act as a deterrent. I am not sure either is happening.
I would also be interested in knowing should Scott run in the upcoming election if he will be breaking and/or seeking a variance to his sentencing. For many reasons (that I outlined last week on CKNW), I hope Scott does not run and seeks the help he needs, gives the City the relief we desire and the $10,000 he banked with the City after the last election is donated to the Tri-Cities Women’s Resource Centre.
UPDATE: On Thursday, October 16, 2008 Scott appealed his curfew restrictions and now has to be home on non council meeting nights from 10pm to 6am. This means on October 2nd Scott appears to have indeed been in violation of his curfew.
