I saw this ad in the latest Staples flyer and had a laugh. When was the last time you saw an ad for a computer – or for anything really – where a free DOWNGRADE was being offered?
The irony here is that last weekend I was discussing how folks were indeed downgrading from Vista to XP. Does not say much for Microsoft’s latest and “greatest” operating system.
But this does say a lot about Staples Canada President Steve Matyas who goes on to prove his genius is never ending. (Note to self, it will be interesting to see if Staples / Steve uses any sort of news/blog clipping service – or if Steve sees this as blatant kissing up, which it is not, ’cause Steve is awesome).
Indeed; people downgrading their OS…says a lot about the company behind it. Microsoft is too big, too greedy and is a victim of its own monopoly. There’s nothing exciting that came out of Redmont in many years.
There’s a reason people are starting to eye the macs and linux, such as ubuntu as an alternative. With the huge improvements in the many linux distributions, it is prime and ready for many people. I personally have been using ubuntu for one year now on all my pcs and even my brand new dell xps m1330 – and although it hasn’t been without some hickups (I’m more of a power user), the experience has been awesome and I have never looked back.
Who wants to be in the grasp of monopoly? Who wants to endlessly have to upgrade their applications (it gets pricey too), just to be able to open files made with previous versions? I don’t. Plus I don’t enjoy the fact that my files are not truly mine, that I can only open it with microsoft products.
With linux, you have none of that. You own everything you produce and the freedom is magnificent. It’s computing as it was and as it should be.
