Evergreen Skytrain?

After years of wondering and years of debate, today Kevin Falcon announced that the Evergreen Line will be elevated and tunneled using Skytrain like technology. We will know more in the next 45 days – such as the actual route – after consultation with the Tri-Cities Mayors.

Here is an article from the Vancouver Sun.

The B.C. government unveiled today a $1.4-billion “business case” aimed at delivering advanced light rapid transit to the northeast sector communities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody by 2014.

Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon said the proposed Evergreen Line would represent a SkyTrain-style extension of the existing Millennium Line and run between Lougheed station and Douglas College in Coquitlam, while paralleling the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks through Port Moody.

The province and TransLink are each contributing about $400 million to the project, and the federal government is now being asked to cough up an equal amount.

Public-private partnerships are viewed as potentially also contributing to the cost of the project.

The province is giving the mayors of the northwest communities 45 days to discuss the business plan, including ideas on exact routing of the ALRT line.
